Endo Story: Sarah’s Journey
Sarah was 29 when she realized that the pain she had been living with for years was not “normal.”
Since high school, her periods had been debilitating. Every month, she would miss classes, cancel plans, and spend hours curled up with a heating pad. Doctors often told her that painful periods were simply part of being a woman. She was prescribed different birth control pills, advised to take over-the-counter pain medication, and encouraged to “wait and see.”
As Sarah entered her late twenties, the symptoms worsened. The pain began appearing outside of her menstrual cycle. She experienced severe bloating, fatigue, lower back pain, and discomfort during exercise. Eventually, she started having trouble concentrating at work because she was constantly exhausted and worried about when the next flare-up would occur.
After years of feeling dismissed, Sarah found a provider who listened carefully to her symptoms and medical history. For the first time, she heard a word that seemed to explain everything: endometriosis.
Following a comprehensive evaluation, Sarah was diagnosed with endometriosis. While receiving the diagnosis was emotional, it also brought relief. She finally understood that her pain was real and that there was a medical reason behind it.
Working with her care team, Sarah developed a personalized treatment plan that included symptom management, lifestyle adjustments, and ongoing monitoring. Over time, she learned how to identify her triggers, advocate for her needs, and prioritize her health.
Today, Sarah still lives with endometriosis, but it no longer controls her life. She openly shares her story to help others recognize that severe menstrual pain should never be ignored and that answers are possible when patients are heard and supported.
